Burning Down The House – A Daily Prompt Post

Daily Prompt, how do you keep coming up with all this?

Your home is on fire. Grab five items (assume all people and animals are safe). What did you grab?

This is easy. First, there’s the logical answer that no one seems to have thought of: I would grab three hoses – not five because we only have three outside faucets – and put out the fire.

But if someone wants to say that is cheating, fine. I would have to grab the following, in no particular order:

My hard drive containing the vast majority of my writing, financials, photos, music, etc. etc. etc.
My special bag full of irreplaceable things, such as the rest of my writing, high school dance pictures, wedding/reception pictures,other historical things, etc.
Giant books of photos taken way before hard drives were practical, from both my wife and daughter before I met them, and from our lives since then.
James Dean’s iPod, Lawyer’s Nintendo DS, wife’s Kindle, wife’s phone, my phone and mp3 player – in short, all electronic portable devices
One bag stuffed full of clothes for a couple of days.

In other words, all irreplaceable things, plus the practical clothing bag.

  Well, they said people and animals are assumed to be safe. If you can’t put it out, then you’d take all the irreplaceable things you have, right?

I made a similar list, except mine is just an all around exit plan. Fire. Hurricane. Death (not mine). Disease (again, not me hopefully). Divorce.

I had to do this for 10 years when I lived in the far white north. Prepare a summer “escape” bag in case of forest fire (pics, insurance policies & important papers, clothes for 3 days, meds, snacks & water). Prepare a winter “escape” bag in case the vehicle breaks down & you’re stuck in a snow bank for 20 hours. (Empty tin can, candle, matches, blankets & warm dry clothing, snacks, water, something bright to put on the antenna in case you get snowed under). See, I said I’m a safety girl!
