Daily Prompt asks (Musical):
What role does music play in your life?
As I said in the title, it’s the only drug with no harmful side effects. It’s the mood-altering substance that guides you into whatever mood you like – uplifting, calm, excited, sleepy, sensuous, sexy, or some combination. If you are depressed, for example, you can listen to depressing music, and it makes you feel a little better to know that others feel as you do, viscerally, and you share something with someone else in the world. At the same time, you could also listen to uplifting music which ends your depression (hopefully) and puts you in a much better mood. If you want to relax and be happy, you can listen to ambient – but if you want to sit still yet be thrilled, just add drums under it and it’s relaxing music over a heart-pumping beat.
It’s impossible to listen to too much music. You can do it while you’re doing nearly anything else, and it sets moods without you realizing it sometimes. Consider movies – it’s not realistic, sure, but think how empty and stark movies would be without music behind and under them.
It’s a stretch sometimes to find music that hasn’t been done before, but it’s possible. At the very least, music can be new to you. I am pleasantly surprised all the time, especially when people I’ve inspired to listen to certain artists share a song with me I hadn’t heard before – right, Hasty? Thanks for Itoshii Hito! And Guapo! Thanks for Don’t Gotta Work It Out, and all the other music you put on your blog!
That’s another thing – sometimes the best way to hear music you’ve never heard before is to listen to it in another language. The vocals become another instrument, until you look up the translation – then they become shorthand for the emotions you felt when you read the translated words. Unlike drugs, you can get addicted to music without suffering any hardships. You can listen to as many different types of music as there are artists to make them. And you can listen to as much music in one night as you want, and you never get out of control. I’ve covered lots of these in my Musicology posts. In any case, get into it – music helps every situation.
Okay, before I start getting all mystical and shit, there’s also lots of comedic music – some novelty, that are really just sung jokes, and some are brilliant. This is where most people can come together and agree on music. There are some amazing artists, witty and hilarious.

You’re welcome.
Never too much music in anyone’s life!!
Nope. Never!
Music is my favorite drug ~ but sometimes it makes me maudlin…
You can control it, though.
Yup – I know if I’m sad, stay clear of Pink Floyd! But often I love to just put on the Cramps and jump around.
I’d never thought of music as a drug before, but I guess you could call me happily addicted. And I am with you on listening to songs in other languages. There are whole sections of my music collection that I can sing along to, but have no idea what the words are, let alone what they mean. It is enough that the music speaks to me.
I agree! I love when my mp3 player is on random, and I hear songs in 6-7 different languages.
I do that all the time – even with my iTunes. I just love some of the reactions I get from visitors when they can’t figure out what’s coming next.
Music has been my drug of choice for years. And it has served me well. Thanks for the post
Music fills my heart.
Oi – Thanks for the PINGBACK ~
YW
Music is my drug of choice! Music and wine. Music and wine at the same time. <3
Hey! Me too. But you can listen to music at work. Well YOU can also drink wine, but… you know what I mean.
You are right about listening in other languages. One of my favourite groups is Spanish and don’t speak the language.
Thanks for the pingback!
Is it Circos y Magos?
No it’s Fito & Fitipaldis. But as you mentioned Circos y Magos I checked them out too.
I love that band.
Thank you for the pingback
You are welcome!

We should write a song together based on this post.
Yeah, we should, and it’s definitely music, because love has lots of harmful side effects.
Tell me about it.
You. Are. A. Genius!
I have never heard anyone refer to music as a ‘mood-altering-substance’.. and I have heard that chain of words used a lot, as I’m a recovering heroin addict.. My point is, Music is most def. a mood altering substance and the fact that you made that connection makes you the smartest man of the year! Whooo! <3 Jen
I wouldn’t say I’m a genius. I just love music. You have all types of music at your disposal at all times, to create any mood you like, or enhance moods you’re already in. Drugs are just artificial versions of what music does naturally, including sounds of nature like waterfalls, waves crashing, wind in trees, etc.
On top of that, you remember everything you do, you remain in control (except maybe when you dance, lol), and you can stop whenever you want and return to “reality”.
I agree with everything you said. ~J
Oddly, so do I. LOL thanks.

You’re welcome Hotspur….some great lines in that song. Also, my closet floor wouldn’t be as amazing as it is without music….they have both saved my life more than once!
Your closet is as big as my whole house. Lol…but I’m glad music saves you. It saves me too.
