“We think, sometimes, there’s not a dragon left.”
Daily Prompt is properly misspelled as “Daley Promt” – so few people realize that. They misspell the misspelling until it goes all the way back around to being correct.
Take the first sentence from your favorite book and make it the first sentence of your post.
Oh, okay Daily Prompt emboldened sentence. I will comply with your request immediately.
“In the beginning….” – just kidding. I’m doing the first sentence from The Bridge Across Forever by Richard Bach.
We think, sometimes, there’s not a dragon left. All the battles are over, or are the same battles with different names, weapons and uniforms. Even on a personal level, we think everything has been done. All the songs have been written. All the lovely poetry has been written. All the happy endings have been fulfilled. And what battles there are, we think they’re boring. Corrupt politicians? Lost loves? These don’t really excite us anymore. There is no tragedy so great, no love so inspiring, no event so mind-blowing, that we can’t bog it down in some kind of overthinking, analysis, debate, or sheer desensitization from overexposure.
But there is one dragon always there. Always. It’s the only battle left, and that’s because it’s the hardest. The battle within. The constant struggle to maintain the balance between making ourselves happy and fulfilled without making someone else unhappy – and at the same time, making as many other people happy as possible without losing ourselves.
How do you win that battle?
Edward Hotspur

Very powerful, so true…the battle within, the struggle…I’d love to sit and have a chat with you.
That’s one of the oddest and yet most fulfilling compliments ever. Thanks!
Guess the dragon in the room is easier to ignore. (So that’s where the invisibility cloak went)
Well said.
I really like yours! All right, I am going to give this a try.
You say that to all the guys. Ha ha
I CANNOT believe I didn’t see that coming. Sigh…I’ll save you the trouble:
“That’s what she said.”
She couldn’t say it with her mouth all f
Y I can no retweet this? Lol
I not only am challenged by your post, but now I want to read this book as well!
It’s excellent, as is the follow-up entitled One. Very inspirational and moving.
Awesome…as soon as the dissertation is finished, this is at the top of the (growing steadily longer) list of things I want to read for fun!
How much longer do you have?
Sometimes I feel like my whole life is a dissertation.
Haha – well it sounds as if you write enough for one.
I am on track (as of right this moment) to graduate in August.
Its funny – people have said – don’t write poetry – just finish it. But I’ve found that for me, productivity here leads to productivity there.
Yay on both counts.
I totally agree – it’s like working your writing muscles helps you lift the dissertation, right?
EXACTLY – what a perfect way to put it. I had always said that writing opens the “me/Mims side”, and the dissertation is something for ME (even not as Mims) which sounds almost selfish…but I like your thought better.
All work and no play makes Mimsy bored and sad.
LOL all mama etc and no Mims makes Mims bored and sad. The work…is play.
LOL
How does Mr. Hotspur manage the work/family time and writing? I mean…I hear, well read, the book is almost 1/2 done.
I can type without looking at the keyboard, and I just type what I think without too many edits. And, lunch breaks? Yeah.
The battle can only be won if we keep trying…..your writing makes many people happy and, I hope, keeps you happy as well. Your words are strong enough to slay any dragon!!
You are an amazing human for saying that. Thanks!
The truth is easy to speak!!
Ooh, I may have to steal that line for my next post…..but I still meant it!!
You can win the battle and still lose the war… I know this isn’t at all helpful, but it was the only clever thing I couold think of… in a depressing sort of a way…
That is true and profound too.
I do try my best… at least with you…
And besides… we can’t kill all the dragons. In the first place, the SPCA would have a cow… ha!… and also, dragons poop unicorns, who poop rainbows, so we wouldn’t have any rainbows.
Dragons breathe fire.
They do that too. They can multitask.
So eloquently put. Our lives are a constant battle, whether it be dragons or demons. And thank you for honouring me with a link.
You are welcome! Thank you for honoring me with a comment.
